Setting suns remind me of where you are,
Of where you are not,
Of where I long for you to be.
I plead for your return
From the Void that has robbed me of so much.
I grieve my losses,
I lament loneliness
Like catching wisps of smoke in a dark room,
I cradle our memories,
Wishing them real
In the dying sunlight
As shrouds of shadow are cast upon me
Night! I welcome your brevity
My love and I will soon reunite,
Never to be ripped apart.

I will not let her go.
Together, we can endure punishing nights
And find strength in the rising dawn,
As we are drenched in the yellows and reds
Of newborn sunlight
Helpless, painful lies!
Knowing you will never return,
I kneel before an empty altar,
Hoping it will answer.
I will wait
Until I awake to every new mourning,
Until the sun threatens to set once more.

Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
